How Large Safes Can Be Constructed To Be Most Effective
Large safes can be the most effective way to protect items which are bulky and difficult to store, and they can also be useful in storing large quantities of valuable stock. Having a safe which is large, heavy and bulky can present unique problems to the owner, but it can also confer distinct advantages. For the most part, a safe of any dimensions is subject to the same underlying principles, that it is only as strong as its weakest feature or area, and that it needs to be safeguarded against possible removal.
A large safe has many uses in both the residential and commercial sectors. In a private home it will normally be used to store antiques or jewelry which is of both commercial and sentimental value, and as such quick and easy access is rarely an important consideration. This gives the owner so much more freedom in the way that the safe can be located, and protected with other security measures to make intrusion even harder. The best location for such a safe is below ground level, and this also allows for extra protection to be added between the safe and the potential intruder.
Safes which are located in a basement have an extra degree of immunity from fire damage, especially if they are embedded in concrete. Fire and heat rise, and if there is nothing which can conduct them downwards the safe and its contents will remain unharmed. A floor safe will also be more difficult to penetrate because there will be less of it potentially visible to the intruder. One of the inherent disadvantages of a large safe is that it will have surfaces which are relatively easy to bore through with the right tools. If the sides are embedded in concrete, only the front face will be showing and vulnerable.
In commercial buildings large safes are often the equivalent of extra rooms. They have an actual door through which a person of average height can easily walk, and often a door which is so heavy it is better operated by more than one staff member. These safes often contain valuable items which can be taken into the store and put up for sale when existing stocks have run out, or they can be used as storage for the items of paying customers as in the case of an hotel. The entry system of such a safe needs to be complex as there will be more than one staff member needing access.
Because a large safe has a wide area which an intruder can work on given enough time, it is vital to have other layers of defense in front of the safe. Fire doors can provide protection which will give more time for firefighters to arrive on the scene, and if these doors are solid core and fitted with deadlocks they can also slow down intruders. Alarm systems need to be configured so that they send signals to the owners of the building whenever there is a presence detected, and pictures need to be taken and sent to remote locations electronically.
The most effective large safes are always going to be those which are designed and built at the same time as the building itself. This way, they can be fully embedded into the walls to such an extent that the building walls are actually the walls of the safe. The door can also be fitted in such a way as to make the edges inaccessible. If your building already exists and does not have a safe already built into it, it will be more than worth your while to have a reconstruction carried out. Building work will always produce the strongest large safes.
