Why Biometric Safes Are The Wave Of The Future

Biometric safes add an extra dimension of security to a tool which has proven effective on so many occasions over hundreds of years. The safe has an enviable record of protecting and preserving assets against fire and theft, and the most effective statistic of all is the one which is impossible to manage. That is the number of people who have chosen not to attempt vandalism or burglary simply because they knew that there was a safe on the premises which would be beyond their ability to deal with.

These highly effective safes have been used in both commercial and domestic properties to preserve money, important paperwork, life mementos and souvenirs, jewelry, antiques, company records and items belonging to paying customers. The type of safe used in a business often needs to have an entry system which allows multiple users access to the safe, and this inevitably increases the risk to the business. Many businesses have employed more than one safe so that the most important business assets can be stored in a safe which can only be accessed by the owners of the company. Domestic safes typically only have one or two people which need access to them, so the entry issues are far fewer.

security

The method which has traditionally been used to gain entry to a safe is by combination lock. A lock with multiple barrels would have a unique combination which the person operating the lock would need to know in order to gain access. This purely mechanical system was used almost exclusively for over a century before the development of electronic systems. Once the electronic key had been developed, this could add an extra dimension of safety. The numeric key could be used in conjunction with a annual lock or by itself, and entry to the safe would be gained more quickly by an authorized user.

Now, technology has advanced even further to provide a system which is virtually impossible to overcome and defeat. When the code to unlock the safe was a simple number, there was always a potential weakness. Anyone who discovered the numeric combination would be able to gain entry to the safe without even needing to break it. Some locks could also be manipulated by a skilled operator to be opened even without the code. With biometric safes, these problems are solved by a lock which operates using the individual's own unique fingerprint.

This type of safe is virtually impossible to crack in the sense of duplicating the entry code as the human fingerprint in unique. To succeed you would need to be able to create a duplicate of the owner's fingerprint on what would be effectively a thin glove, and then use it to open the safe. Even this may not be enough if the safe also uses a PIN code in addition to the fingerprint at point of entry. These advanced safes usually need to be broken in the crudest of ways, either with explosives or something that can cut through the tough metal.

The use of biometric safes is only going to grow in the years to come, as the technology improves still further. We are only now seeing the first sales of those safes which operate purely on biometric technology, needing no support from a PIN number or other type of key activated lock. While it will inevitably take some time for this technology to fall in price to the level where it is competitive with a common lock, there is no doubt that the future of the home and commercial safe is in the new development of biometric safes.
